How to use your notebooks to get the most out of them

Maybe you’re like me, a notebook freak. I have a full house, but I confess something: I always find room for one more 😉 Notebooks are a wonderful tool for creativity and inspiration and in this post I want to tell you how you can make the most of yours.

Sometimes I use the notebooks to work on a client’s project, but on many other occasions my notebooks give me that little moment of intimacy with myself, of peace, of flowing without thinking about anything else but giving free rein to my creativity. I feel that for professions like mine it is very important that we know how to connect with our own needs and not to live continuously glued to those of our clients.

That always ends up taking its toll, don’t you think?

How can I use my notebooks?

Here are some ideas so you can use your notebooks in a multitude of different ways:

  1. Personal diary. You know, that place where you write down what has happened to you every day. You can do it in writing or by letting a paintbrush fly. 😉
  2. Bullet journal. If you want to keep track of your year, your quarter, your month and your day, the bullet journal is the perfect formula for you. You won’t miss a single detail! And the best thing is that it is a much freer format than a diary and will allow you to capture in every moment what is stirring inside you.
  3. Recipe notebook. If you are a cook you may want to keep a record of those recipes that you find on the Internet and that you always end up forgetting. Leave them well written down for the next time you get in front of the stove.
  4. Inspiration notebook. Find, cut out and glue pieces of magazines, newspapers, flayers and papers of all kinds. Make your own collages or use pencils and markers to let your imagination run wild. What happens in your mind when you’re not pursuing a specific goal?
  5. Travel diary. Maybe you have an upcoming destination nearby or you have just returned from a wonderful vacation with your partner or friends. It’s time to plan or record everything. Draw maps, paste photos or make drawings of those places where you have been or want to visit. Believe me, the travel experience will change completely.
  6. Morning pages. I am sure you have already heard about them a thousand times. The morning pages are that proposal that Julia Cameron makes in her book “The Artist’s Way”. It consists of writing every morning, as you wake up, three pages of your notebook without thinking about anything in particular. Just let go of everything that occupies your head from first thing in the morning.
  7. Gratitude journal. How about setting aside five minutes to write down those three things you’re thankful for each day? You know they don’t have to be really big things. Sometimes a gesture from a stranger or a kind word from the sales clerk at the grocery store can make our day better.
  8. Project notebook. As I said, sometimes I use my notebooks as a work tool. In them I create sketches of logos, illustrations or even packaging. I also like to use them to create chromatic palettes using magazine clippings or any paper I have on hand.

I have a present for you!
